My most curious discovery
Sometimes you observe something and you kinda know it's out-of-place but you don't immediately figure out, what causes the oddness. We had just finished our coffee at the Garage mid-ride and I was talking to John while putting my helmet and gloves back on when I spotted a guy pumping his tyres on the foot path with a proper track pump. At closer view I realised that there was an entire self-service bike workshop on the footpath. Tyre levers, allan keys, spoke tensioners... you name it, it was dangling from the wires. Where had this come from? Another sign of the times?
My best coffee this weekend
My best coffee this weekend, apart from the one Alberto had made me at home on Sunday morning, I had at a very bike friendly coffee shop on Commercial Rd. Go and check it out if you are in that part of town.
My most unexpected encounter
Not once, but many times we had mentioned during the ride, how nice it was to ride without arm warmers for the first time in months and what a lovely spring day it was and that it wouldn't be long until we complain about the heat again. I was riding just behind him up this last little hill before my place when the bird struck his helmet. Turning around, he said: "Was that what I thought it was?" I said: "No John. It wasn't a magpie." It was a Butcher bird. Don't believe what the calendar says. It's official. It's spring!
My most memorable moments
Beating this fast looking guy up the Gateway bridge...
... and having him follow me home! :-)

You need to tell us more about the 'self service bike workshop'. Who is responsible for putting it there...?Most unusual have never seen anything like it before..
-Trevor
I also chime in with questions about the bike tools on wires and air pump station--that's fantastic. I wonder about vandalism and theft, though. If you have a chance, perhaps have a look at it again in a few weeks to see how life in the big city is treating it.
...curious choice of words, john romeo alpha...i say that because one of my first thoughts was that the assortment of objects hanging on wires looked like a bicycle tool wind chime sculpture...
...& yes, it will be interesting to see if the magnanimous nature of the offering will remain unsullied...
Trevor - We are just as puzzled. It looks like a proper city council job but I will try and find out more about it.
John Romeo Alpha - I shall certainly keep my eyes on it and will report.
bgw - Maybe it is a bicycle inpired wind chime sculpture, errected to honor Cadel Evan's TdF win and I, with my practical sense, mistook it for a self-help workshop? :-)
Groover, such a great post!
Yes, spring is here, the Water Dragons are back in our backyard!! The self service bike workshop is just great if your "lucky" to have a puncher around the courner ;-) No seriously, great invention!
...ahhh, nice...i like your take that it might be a tribute to cadel evan's tour de france win & as such, it could be both your 'self help workshop' & my aboriginal inspired, bicycle themed 'wind chime'...
...perhaps like doublemint gum, "...it's two, two - two things in one..."...
Your spring means we're on the cusp of autumn...just not ready!
what a great idea that workshop is. would last 5mins here though before someone nicked it!
That bike repair station or whatever it is called is quite clever. I hope folks take care of it and maybe then more of them will crop up!
